The skill of making terracotta tiles depicting everyday life, and idols,
has passed from one generation to another in the village of Molela, Rajasthan.

The Rathwas, Bhilals and Nayak tribes adorn their walls with Pithora art
to mark the advent of an auspicious occasion.

 

 



KAVAD STORY-BOXks

Kavads are small wooden boxes with multiple folding doors, each of which
are painted in folk style telling mythological stories.

 

 



LEATHER PUPPET MAKINGLeather Puppet-01

Before the advent of television, shadow puppetry was a popular form of
entertainment. Puppets are till date, made of leather and perforated so
the light can pass through and shadows can be cast.

 



GOND ARTGond-01

The Gond tribe creates signature patterns to give texture to any painting.
The art is signified by the depiction of fantasy-wildlife.

 

 


 

MASK MAKINGch mask 1

The Nakashis of Cheriyal village in Andhra entertained people through
their scrolls and masks. Each mask is made using tamarind seed paste
and sawdust powder and is painted to represent different characters.


CALLIGRAPHYCalligraphy-01-01

An ancient form of lettering, this art dates back to the times of Harappa
and Mohenjodaro, and can still be found on the Ashoka Pillar.

 

 


 SOARA TRIBAL ARTSoara-01

This art depicts the activities in the daily lives of the Soara tribe.
In alternating sets of rows, differing moods and activities of the
people are portrayed on Tussar Silk.
